A CONVERSATION WITH THREE KABK WOMEN.

This website was created for
a project incited by
Susana Carvalho.

My name is Michelle Janssen and since Septem-ber 2016 I am studying Graphic Design at the Royal Acadamy of Arts in The Hague. In April 2017 I was given the opportunity
to interview a
few people in the academy for an assignment. For these interviews
I selected the following
three women:

Pauline Schep.

The reason why I selected Pauline is quite simple. Pauline has been connected to the academy for more than 30 years. She studied at the academy for eight years, three years
of MTS Photo-graphy and five years Graphic Design. After her studies, she taught Spatial Design at the Acadamy for
23 years. At a certain point, she got more and more responsibility. She started to help
with organising
and arranging certain things
at the academy voluntarily. Currently, she is there for the students if they need a person to talk to. She is arranging the student's schedule and she works closely together with Roosje and Niels, the heads of the Graphic Design department at KABK. She also
has her own ring collections which are inspired by her background in packaging design and her back-ground as Graphic Designer.

Lauren Alexander

The reason why I talked to Lauren is actually because Susana suggested her. I was looking for women that I could talk with about females in Graphic Design, being political in work and KABK
in general. Lauren is currently a teacher and class coach at the Graphic Depart-ment of the KABK in the third year. Next to teaching, Lauren is part of Foundland Collect-ive. Together with her partner Ghalia Elsrakbi who is based in Cairo, whilst Lauren's base is in Amster-dam. It was very interesting to talk with Lauren because she is not my teacher yet and I feel very lucky that she made time to speak to me more that once. Which gave me the opportunity to get to know her a little bit as the inspiring woman she is.

Roosje Klap.

The reason why I wanted to talk to Roosje is I think maybe quite obvious if I tell you that I wanted to talk to the women of KABK. Roosje is THE Woman in the KABK Graphic Design Depart-ment. She has been, together with Niels, the head of the Graphic Design Department since September 2013.
So to put it very plainly: Roosje is Pauline's and Lauren's boss.
Next, to being head of the department and teaching at the KABK is Roosje also advising researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. Plus she is the head of Studio Roosje Klap for visual commu-nication, mainly graphic design. That mainly works for a clientéle in the cultural field: museums, galleries, art publishers and artists.
